CREATION

Ce que je crie
c'est l'amour

non la lutte pour la vie
l'amour
non la morsure
de destruction
et de mort
mais l'agression
de surgissements
nouveaux
de la musique
de nos corps
et de nos voix.
De nos mains qui se rapprochent
à se toucher
jaillit le feu
de la création
du théâtre
de fête grave
le plaisir charnel
de tracer
des sentes nouvelles
pour que chemine
l'action
éperdue
d'angoisse et d'extase
de pleurs
et de sourires
sans emphase
à bas les masques, les mirages
nous jouons
les mains nues
modeleuses de notre glaise
pour la transfiguration
des images
que nous nous renvoyons.

What I shout
is love

not the struggle for life
love
not the bite of destruction

and of death
but the aggression
of newly arisen facts
of the music
of our bodies
and of our voices.

From our hands that are coming closer
to the point of nearly
touching each other springs the fire
of creation
of theatre
of solemn feast
the carnal pleasure
of tracing
new tracks
so that the action
desperate
with anguish and ecstasy
and tears
and smiles
may proceed without bombast
down with masks, with mirages
we are playing
with our bare hands
the shapers of our clay
to transfigure
the images
which we reflect to each other.

Biodrame was written by the poet and doctor Serge Béhar
for Roy Hart to perform at the Théâtre des Nations festival,
organised by Jean-Louis Barrault in Paris in April 1972.
